Ethiopia- 4 months after it announced, the gov. said today that it has closed the notorious detention center, Ma’ekelawi, which is recognized as a torture chamber. A notice at the gate says visitors can visit detainees at the #AddisAbeba police commission temporary facility.
Hundreds of prisoners held at the Ma’ekelawi, including #Oromia region justice bureau PR head #TayeDendea and Univ. lecturer & blogger #SeyoumTeshome, both held under the #StateofEmergency, are now transferred to the #AddisAbeba police commission detention facility.

Yes this is something to cheer about. What would be going backwards is if the government replaces one notorious human canning outfit with another. Africa is well known for taking one step forward and then taking two or three giant steps backward. Like I said it before, this is it. Make it or break it moment is hovering over the people and the old country. It is time to regroup for all stakeholders inside and outside the country. If I am given the privilege of tossing my two cents worth of plea to those of you who still hold our people close to your hearts would be to rise up to the occasion and give dialogue a chance. Once again I call upon this young leader to do everything at his disposal to make sure all political prisoners are released without any precondition including that family man Stage. Release him to his family for the sake of his children. He will have nothing to snoop around Abd-el-Sisi’s courtyard in Piccola Roma but help raise his family in Britain. Release all political prisoners, re-instate our glorious tradition of public dialogue and invite the opposition to play roles in the affairs of the country pledging peaceful discourse. Who says democracy is noise proof? It can be raucous in rooms full of noisy constructive ideas. Raucous but always dignified. Eyal-al-souqs(balegas) will be and feel out of place. The society is seen voluntarily restraining itself from resorting to sheer insults and self-destructive name calling. Why not? We are already imbued with and primed for such cultured discourse by centuries old values. May Our Creator Nudge and Guide Us Into This Route of Dignified Dialogue!!! And Let’s Keep This In Our Daily Prayers!!!!
