The Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU), in its general assembly held today at its premises on the Africa Avenue, threatened of a possible national labour strike if the government pursues the labour bill without heading its concerns.
The general assembly was held in the presence of more than 100 labour leaders of the nine federations.
In its statement, the Confederation declared that it would forward its concerns and complaints to the office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Labour & Social Affairs, (MoLSA) and nine regional state administrations. It also stated that it would proceed with a national labour strike if its concerns are not addressed.
This comes just three days after the Union listed out over ten points in the labour bill it disagreed on, during a press conference attended by most of the local media.
Doubling of the probation period, reduction in the annual leave, extended employment termination period, less payment for occupational accidents, and strict measures imposed on latecomers are major reforms made in the new bill.
The last amendment of the law was made 11 years ago. Currently, the bill is queuing at the table of Council of Ministers for approval before it is sent to the Parliament, according to sources.
