Addis Standard || In a fresh agreement signed today OLF-SG, led by Dawud Ibssa, disavowed links with all armed groups operating in its name and agreed to support peace efforts by the federal government and Oromia regional state.
The agreement was signed this afternoon in the presence of Oromia vice president Shimelis Abdissa, General Berhanu Jula, Military Operations Division Chief of the National Defense Force (ENDF), Addisu Arega, ODP secretariat, as well as three members of a civic committee formed to oversee broker a peace deal that oversaw the encampment of Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) members, including opposition politician Bekele Gerba and OMN executive Director and activist Jawar Mohammed.
Dawud Ibssa, leader of OLF-SG, said that his party will from now on disown any armed groups operating in its name in the country and that it will cooperate with the government in securing peace in areas where armed groups are still operating. Several reports indicate that armed groups who are often accused of being members of Oromo Liberation Army, the armed wing of OLF-SG, are still active in parts of Western Oromia and Guji areas in southern Ethiopia.
Today’s signing comes in the backdrop of reports of the killing of six people On Monday this week in western Oromia by a hand grande thrown at members of Ethiopian defense forces, according to a report on BBC Afaan Oromo.
As is the case form most incidents in the past the exact circumstances of the death of the six people are not established. Local authorities tell the BBC Afaan Oromo that the deceased were community members who were caught in a crossfire when OLA members attacked the federal defense forces by throwing the hand grenade whereas residents said the six people died when the federal army took a counterattack measure against OLA.
The signing of today’s agreement means the federal government is likely to step up efforts to militarily deal with armed groups still active in western and southern parts of the country and are largely accused of being OLA members.
Is good news that the OLF has finally renounced all forms of armed violence it has been waging against not only past and present governments but also in many instances against civilians. To my understanding the disavowing was done by a faction of OLF led by its official leader. I am not gonna say anything to jinx this ‘about-time’ decision. I Praise The Good Lord for Blessing me with such a long life to see this. I have Praised Him already when I saw the leaders and rabid operatives using their most forbidden word ‘Ethiopia’ instead of their term of choice ‘Abyssinia’ to call that gem of all colored people. And now this? I feel that I finally came out ahead!!! It might have taken more than 45 years but I am very satisfied now. I am not gonna say anything to rattle the cage. No, no, no!!! Folks, you see the power of our level heads!!! Carving out a territory as a fiefdom in replica of Kiir or Samora Machel was supposed to never happen in the old country. I am so elated now I feel like a kid at a candy store. Congratulations to those elders who worked on the students of Marx and Lenin so tirelessly to bring about this historic day.
