I am dismayed to hear that two of our students were killed and 14 others are wounded on Saturday at Woldia University in North Central Ethiopia after a clash in the evening on the campus.

Another day of killing, grieving for our society. When will these killing and violence end throughout our land? Where is the rule of law?

I feel like I’ve lost a part of me to Woldia University clash and killing because Woldia is one of the 12th universities I gave public lectures at. I spoke to more than three thousands students in Woldia University at the pictures below.

I deeply feel the pain of these lost lives. I strongly condemn this senseless killing and brutal attack and call on the government to bring the perpetrators to justice.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to those who lost their loved ones and pray that the wounded will soon recover. These are egregious crimes, piercing the hearts of many caring people.

Sadly, the numbers of tragic reports affecting the people throughout Ethiopia have become almost a weekly occurrence. It overwhelms our emotions. It is almost too much to emotionally deal with when we think of these tragedies.

Once again I am grieve for these precious lives and extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who so tragically killed.

In closing, I am heartbroken by what has been happening and believe we can find a genuine solution if we are willing to embrace values that support not only our own collective group, but all our people— putting humanity before ethnicity, or any other difference.

Human life is precious and as a society, when these lives are lost, we grieve together regardless of ethnicity, religion, regional background, political view or any other differences.

Until we are all free, no one ethnic group will be free and secure. These principles, upheld by individuals, communities and the rule of law, could have stopped all of these tragedies from occurring and could even minimize the effects of the famine.

May God strengthen the families of those who have lost loved ones in Woldia University and throughout Ethiopia, as they go through this difficult time and may the Almighty God/Allah lead us from the edge of danger to a more compassionate, just and free Ethiopia for all.
